Westland, Sherry Wood, Single Malt Whiskey, USA (46%)

Description

Westland are true Pioneers in every sense of the word. Constantly innovating and pushing boundaries. Their latest Sherry Wood bottling is a marriage between tradition and trailblazing, many of us are familiar with sherry cask whisky, very few of us will have tried sherry cask whiskey. The nose opens with gentle spices, mahogany and raisins make way to salted almonds and pecan pie, while on the palate bundles of dried fruit are backed up by dark chocolate, raspberry brownie and figgy pudding. Finishing long and nutty, with Westland’s tell-tale barley signature. Rich, more-ish and comforting, hard to think of an occasion I wouldn’t want to drink this.

About this spirit

Westland Distillery

Westland Distillery was founded in Seattle in 2010 by Matt Hoffman and Emerson Lamb. Since its inception, Matt has been their Master Distiller, a post he holds to this day. The team at Westland are driven by a philosophy that places barley at the heart of their whisky-making. Their vision is to produce exceptional spirits that are truly reflective of their Pacific Northwest environment, while benefiting everyone involved in the production process. Barley, they believe, is one of the central components behind this (alongside the use of oak and peat).

Barley

Barley is a key ingredient in the production of some of the world's most renowned spirits, particularly whiskey and Scotch whisky. Malted barley is used as the primary grain in many single malt and blended Scotch whiskies, where it contributes a distinct malty, nutty, and sometimes smoky flavour profile. In addition to Scotch, barley is also a staple in the production of Irish whiskey, where it often lends a smoother, creamier taste. The versatility of barley as a grain makes it a favorite for creating complex and deeply nuanced spirits cherished by enthusiasts worldwide.
