Berry Bros. & Rudd Champagne by Mailly, Grand Cru, Brut

Description

Our Own Selection Champagne, sometimes known as our “United Kingdom Cuvée” or “UKC”, is produced for us by our friends at Champagne Mailly. This is a remarkable producer: it’s a collective of winegrowing families based in the village of Mailly, situated in the heart of the Montagne de Reims region. All vineyards in the Mailly village are classified as Grand Cru. This is a delicious, elegant and hugely reliable Champagne we proudly serve at No.3 St James’s Street.

Tasting note

Sourced from the prestigious Grand Cru village of Mailly, our Own Selection Champagne is a classic blend of 75% Pinot Noir and 25% Chardonnay. With more than three years’ ageing, it is a delightfully complex example of non-vintage Champagne. Aromas of brioche and flowers draw you in on the nose. The palate is elegant, marrying notes of lemongrass, gingerbread and honeysuckle.

A very refined example, zesty and limey on the nose with supporting floral notes. Elegant palate, with great purity on the finish.Drink 2019 - 2024Simon Field MW, Peter Liem, David Vareille, Decanter.com

You know in some ways this is my 'pick of the bunch'. It's a Champagne that has always been a value for money favourite, but this bottle was just enchanting, made entirely with grapes from the Grand Cru vineyards of Mailly, and with plenty of reserve wines adding depth to the blend, especially those aged in ex-Château Margaux barrels. Miniscule bubbles stream through the rich golden wine, and the nose combines fresh-baked biscuit warmth with saltiness and fat, generous lemony fruit. On the palate the cushion of mousse is sweet and soft, the fruit depth and complexity surprising with nectarine and tangerine fruity brilliance, and that long, long and refined mineral finish. A seriously good little Champagne this and looks very classy too. TomCannavan- Wine Pages - November 2013

About this wine

Champagne Mailly

Mailly is one of the great Grand Cru villages in the Montagne De Reims. With a membership of 70 growers, the village's eponymous co-operative is one of the most dynamic in the region. Founded in 1929, Champagne Mailly produces only Grand Cru Champagne from its 70 hectares of vineyards, using just Chardonnay and Pinot Noir grapes. These are harvested from more than 400 parcels, providing harmonious and steadfast blends. With a potential output of 500,000 bottles each year, Mailly exports 50% of its production. One has only to visit its splendid seven-story gravity-fed installation to realise that this is a rather special organisation, the quality of its wines matched only be the peerless efficiency of its management. With a gifted winemaker in Hervé Dantan, Mailly are able to exploit the full potential of these top-graded vines and to produce a rich, Pinot Noir dominated Champagne. The qualitative imperative results in extended lees ageing and then a further period of maturation before shipping. The resulting wine is all that Berry's UKC Brut should be; rich, rounded, with enticing aromatics and real authority on the finish. The Blanc de Noirs is made from 100% Pinot Noir from the best parcels of vines, such as les Crayats, les Coutures, and les Chalois. The dosage is 8g/litre. L'Intemporelle is a deluxe cuvée and a blend of 60% Pinot Noir and 40% Chardonnay with a dosage of 8g/litre.
