2019 Berry Bros. & Rudd Thy, Cask Ref. 258, Single Malt Whisky, Denmark (57.6%)
- World Whisky
Description
This is a cask of Thy’s Bøg make, smoked with Beechwood, matured in two quarter casks, one from 2017 and the other from 2019, then vatted together for bottling. The nose darts out of the glass with powerful aromas of wood smoke akin to German Rauchbier, cedar and aged mezcal, with a building toffee note as it breathes. There’s an unexpected burst of citrus on the palate, followed by vibrant fruits and melon. Smoke follows very shortly, giving a wonderful ashy character. A lingering finish of fruit smoke, sour apples and cinnamon leaves a powerful impression. There are few whiskies which are at once truly unique and brilliant, and this is undoubtedly one of them.

Barley
Barley is a key ingredient in the production of some of the world's most renowned spirits, particularly whiskey and Scotch whisky. Malted barley is used as the primary grain in many single malt and blended Scotch whiskies, where it contributes a distinct malty, nutty, and sometimes smoky flavour profile. In addition to Scotch, barley is also a staple in the production of Irish whiskey, where it often lends a smoother, creamier taste. The versatility of barley as a grain makes it a favorite for creating complex and deeply nuanced spirits cherished by enthusiasts worldwide.
