2016 Morgon, Côte du Py, Jean-Marc Burgaud, Beaujolais

Description

Established in 1989, Domaine Jean-Marc Burgaud today comprises 18.5 hectares, the majority in the Cru of Morgon. Jean-Marc considers his Côte du Py the cuvée most representative of Morgon’s singularities. From 50-year-old, south-facing vines in soils of blue schist, it combines great concentration – of tannins and ripe black fruit – with a clear mineral thread, and is exceptionally age-worthy. It was harvested first among Jean-Marc’s reds in 2016 (September 22nd), in a bid to capture the bright acidity characteristic of the vintage. As usual, this cuvée was vinified with all stems retained, and matured in concrete vats, allowing fruit and terroir to speak for themselves. Drink 2018-2025.
Will Heslop, Wine Buyer

The excellence of Cru Beaujolais is something I have held dear for some time, but its ageing potential was first brought to my attention when I was served two Moulin-à-Vent wines from 1961 and 1962 produced by Camille Giroud. The freshness and complexity of these wines was simply astonishing and I have since made it something of a personal mission to return these great wines to their rightful place in the cellars and on the tables of the most discerning wine drinkers. The wines in our offer cover a range of styles; whole-bunch, de-stemmed, oaked, unoaked, elegant and floral, dense and structured. This almost endless variety and versatility is what is most fascinating about Gamay grown on Beaujolais’s volcanic soils. What the wines have in common, however, is that they all offer excellent value for money and great drinking pleasure.

Critics reviews

William Kelley 93/100
Burgaud's 2016 Morgon Cte du Py is pure and expressive, bursting from the glass with aromas of raspberries, plums, red berry preserve and rose petal. On the palate, it's medium to full-bodied, tangy and deep, with a cool, juicy core of fruit and a long, fragrant finish. It's racier and more elegant than the 2017 rendition, but they're on the same qualitative level.William Kelley - 22/09/2018

About this wine

Gamay

A French variety planted predominately in Beaujolais where it is the grape behind everything from light and often acidic Beaujolais Nouveau through to the more serious and well-structured wines from the 10 cru villages. It takes its name from a hamlet just outside Chassagne-Montrachet and was at one stage widely planted on the Côte d`Or. However it was gradually phased out due to its poor yield and supposed poor quality of its wines.

Jean-Marc Burgaud

Coming from a winemaking family, it was almost inevitable that Jean-Marc would set up his own estate, which he did in 1989 with his wife Christine. Their 19 hectares are divided between Morgon (13 hectares), Régnié (one hectare) and Beaujolais Villages (five hectares) and Jean-Marc believes that this is the maximum area he can cultivate while still producing the quality he is after. The gobelet vines have an average age of 60 years, and are planted at high density (10,000 per hectare). Although not certified, he farms organically and all the work in the vineyard is done by hand.
