Youthful, precocious nose of coffee, over-ripe black fruits, raisin and sweet berries. On palate quite spirity, but with very firm tannins, good fleshy weight, characteristic sweetness and plenty of power on the finish. Less finesse than Graham, but singularly attractive and beguiling.

Critics reviews

Neal Martin MW 96/100
The 2000 Fonseca continues to exude finesse and focus on the nose, with pure blackberry, juniper berries, licorice and a touch of sloes, perhaps as Adrian Bridge remarked, just beginning to close after ten years in bottle. The palate is underpinned by very fine tannins, a sensual, svelte texture with wonderful acidity. The harmony and symmetry is alluring, the finish precise and demonstrating the persistency to suggest a long future ahead. Drink 2020-2060.Neil Martin - 28/02/2013

Very bright colour, very single-minded nose. There's a lot of fruit but it's extremely focused at this stage. Intense – showing chocolate, tobacco, toasted wood – it's very charming and seems quite developed, being generous with the secondary flavours considering its age. jancis_robinson_mw MW - JancisRobinson.com – September 2008)

About this wine

Touriga Nacional

Touriga Nacional is a highly regarded grape variety indigenous to Portugal, often considered the country's flagship red grape. Known for its intense aromas and flavours, the wines typically feature dark fruits such as blackberries, blueberries, and plums, along with distinctive floral notes like violets and hints of spices, herbs, and chocolate. These generally have high tannin levels, good acidity, and deep, dark colour, contributing to their structure and ageing potential.
